ge·stalt/gəˈSHtält/
an organized whole that is perceived as more than the sum ofits parts.
When your first impression of a design ispositive, when you instinctively see the design as being good, it’s likelybecause one or more Gestalt principles of perception are at play. When you lookat a design and admire one or two of it’s parts, it’s likely because thoseparts are adhering to one or more Gestalt principles.
Think Gestalt
All furniture arrangementshave a certain gestalt, or "totality," a "form". Largerectangular spaces can be dealt with by dividing the "form" of thespace into multiple forms. A long narrow living space, for instance, can besplit in two by creating zones of function.
TakeMeasurements
The first step in arranginga space is determining its size. Use a tape measure to get the dimensions of aroom. Sketch out a rough layout by size or contact me for a consultation.
Always check thedimensions of the hallways, stairs and door widths leading to the space. This isthe eternal challenge for the homeowner, being sure the entrance and egress ofthe room is large enough for potential purchases.
Estimate Volume
Every object has a height, depth and width. For added visual interest (excitement) to any space, add varyingfurniture of varying characteristics or welcome a pop of color. If you are going for a serene, unchallenging area, for rest or recover, keep the furnishing volumes in a roomsimilar and the color neutral or softer.
It's All aMatter of Scale
The size of piecesrelative to one another and the size of the space is their scale. Again, similarly scaled pieces are more serene when used together, but a nice balanceof pieces creates a harmonious atmosphere, utilizing the differing physicalqualities of height, depth and width throughout the room. When furnishings areout of scale, you'll notice that it just won't feel comfortable or right.
When furnishings are inscale, the room will be balanced and feel harmonious.
